Book club message from Melissa Gonthier
Hello Book Clubbers!
I thought you would all like to know that we will not be having a meeting in December. All the holiday activities make it too hard to get away. So our next meeting is planned for 6:30pm on January 9th 2009!!!! Mindy Wagstaff will be hosting and the book she has chosen is "A Train to Potevka" by Mike Ramsdell. This book is not in the library but it is available on Amazon.com for $10. If anyone has (or plans to buy) this book, let me know and we can all share it so we don't all have to buy it.

Food Storage Handout
If you missed the handout from Danielle Ellis' Food Storage section of the combined PH/RS lesson on Sunday, here it is:
Food Storage Handout
Joint Priesthood/Relief Society Lesson 11/30/08
Gordon B. Hinckley, October 1998, “To the Boys and to the Men”
http://lds.org/conference/talk/display/0,5232,23-1-22-20,00.html
“I am suggesting that the time has come to get our houses in order.”
Gordon B. Hinckley, October 2001, “The Times in Which we Live”
http://lds.org/conference/talk/display/0,5232,23-1-225-27,00.html
"Our safety lies in repentance. Our strength comes of obedience to the commandments of God."
Gordon B. Hinckley, October 2005, “If Ye Are Prepared Ye Shall Not Fear”
http://lds.org/conference/talk/display/0,5232,23-1-559-20,00.html
We can so live that we can call upon the Lord for His protection and guidance. . . . We cannot expect His help if we are unwilling to keep His commandments.
Provident Living Website www.providentliving.org → Family Home Storage and Finances → Three Month Supply, Drinking Water, Financial Reserve, Long-Term Supply
Three-month supply- Rotating pantry. Constantly use and replenish.
Look for deals, but be sure your family will eat it. Costco or Sam’s, case lot sales, sales circulars from other stores. You will also need to purchase bulk oils and salt here.
Drinking Water- minimum 14-day supply, 2 gal/person
Fill clean, used bottles, and/or buy larger water containers. Common sizes are 3 gal (easy to store and lift) 5 gal (very portable) 15 gal (can be carried by two people) and 50 gal (must be moved on a dolly). Purchase from water companies, outdoor supply stores. (1 gal/day is essential for drinking/cooking. The second gallon is for cleaning.)
Home Storage Center (Cannery) This is your long-term supply.
Option 1- Can it yourself. Our ward has time booked at the cannery the FIRST TUESDAY of EVERY MONTH for 2009, from 6-8 p.m. The order form is on the www.providentliving.org site. You can also purchase items (flour, brown sugar, white rice, beans) at bulk stores (Costco, Sams) then purchase cans, lids, oxygen absorbers & boxes from the cannery and then can items at home (our stake has a canner we can check out, or we have members in our ward with a canner you can check out).
Option 2- Buy it at the cannery already in cans.
Option 3- Purchase canned food through www.ldscatalog.com. (Hard Red Wheat, Pinto beans, quick oats, white rice, or a Starter Kit) It will be delivered to your door.
For those trying to make room in the budget to purchase food storage, I recommend adding cannery items to your diet now. This is by far the cheapest way to eat, and the savings in your regular food budget will pay for additional food storage.

A chance to help....
We are asking people to donate gift cards for families that need help with Christmas. I will be passing out tags for specific places on Sunday. If you don't get a chance to pick one up at church, you can call or email me if you are interested in helping, I need quite a few. I will have a box set up at church starting in December where people can turn them in. Sunday, Dec. 14th will be the last day to turn in the cards, so I can get them passed out that night. The box will also be at the Ward Christmas Party on the 13th. Just make sure the amount is written on the outside of the card, before dropping it into the box.
Thanks for your help,
Amy Pendleton

Thanksgiving for Firefighters: update from Catherine Noorda
Tomorrow's the big day to go to the fire station. Hopefully we get a big turnout of people wanting to help! Here are the final instructions: There will be about 10 firefighters there, so bring food accordingly. the station is located on Oquendo and Decatur. To get there take the 215 to Decatur. Exit at Decatur and turn right or north. Go two blocks and turn left at Oquendo. The fire station will be on the left. We'll meet there at 11:30, deliver the food, and then have a quick tour. I'm excited and I think it should be really fun and a good service project! (even if you have not emailed me or called to RSVP, please feel welcome to just show up with a side dish or treat for the fire fighters!)
